The Training Method

The method we use at Beta Dogs is called "The Alpha Canine Communication Method". This has nothing in common with the outdated "Alpha Roll"; a highly triggering method that does more harm than good. The key word to focus on is "Communication". Alpha Dog Training in Melbourne developed this method through years of working with dogs and analysis of skilled observation of canine behaviours.

The basic handling principles are designed to create a channel of communication, a language, that both dogs and humans can understand. This method focuses on reward for the behaviours, actions, and responses that we require from our dogs. The vast majority of dogs crave our love, attention, and affection and will work for these responses from us.

In contrast, an error results in a pressure response from the handler. The dog then has the choice of continuing with the chosen behaviour and the resultant pressure, or they can choose a behaviour which brings them release and peace.

The results of this communication are rapid and effective. The above photo shows my 3 dogs holding a "stepaway" (stay) command under very high distraction. Two are off lead, all three are positioned in a sea-cave because they are at the beach. There are ALL the smells, and wide-open spaces, and sounds and seagulls to chase, yet they choose to hold their places. They know that by doing so they receive the attention and affection they deserve, and ultimately a release command to go and run and play again.

You might wonder why the Jack Russell is on lead: at the time this photo was taken she was ageing and her hearing was fading. This, along with a very high prey drive, meant that when she decided to chase seagulls she would not come back when called. So rather than getting myself frustrated and upset, she was on lead and under control and we were all relaxed.
